Boston Infrastructure in Historically Black Neighborhoods
Date
October 2023 - December 2023
Institution / Department
UF College of Design, Construction and Planning
Principal Investigator
Dr. Azza Kamal
Officially founded in 1630, Boston, Massachusetts is one of the oldest cities in the United States. As a result of segregation and rich African American history, three neighborhoods have become labeled as “Black Boston”: Roxbury, Mattapan, and Dorchester. These neighborhoods hold a high concentration of people of color, but also hold a high population of individuals with low-to-no income, and individuals who are considered socially isolated due to disability or age. The focus of this project is to examine the vulnerability of these neighborhoods and compare them to existing infrastructure in surrounding neighborhoods. The infrastructure being examined relate to stormwater management, transportation, and disability services.
